stock price alerts on your mobile as sms

August 18th, 2008 by admin148 views ||  |  No Comments »

Traders will kill to have an ability to get the stock price at any time. If you are a trader then I am sure you will fall in love with me after reading this post. :)

moneycontrol.com: This is clearly the best of the lot. They have 2 options. The Stock Tracker and the Portfolio Tracker. The stock tracker will give you information for a single stock at a cost of 1Rs/ Day. Whereas the portfolio tracker will give you information about your selected portfolio. However this costs you 100Rs /month. However if you are serious about the stock market then it is definitely worth the cost. Just look at all the information they provide at http://www.moneycontrol.com/stock_track/

mytodaysms: This is the only service provider in the list that is free. Simply send a sms with the text code “START SENSEX yourCityName” to 09845298452. You will keep getting sms updates for free. However the information does not look useful enough for a real trader. (You will have to pay 2 Rs for that start message)

The above 2 services push the information to you when they feel appropriate. However if you want to have the ability to pull the information when you want then they are not that relevant.

funsms.net To get the stock quote for a particular stock type “STO Companyname” and send to 8888. e.g send STO RIL to 8888 to get stock price quote for Reliance Industries.

sify.com You will have to Send “STK Keyword” to 54545. Keyword is the NSE symbol of the stock you want.

investgeeta.com sms “IG scripcode” to 57333 e.g sms “IG 500470″ to 57333 for Tata Steel. You can get the complete list of scrip codes here.

Let us know if you any other service or if you have used any of the services listed above.

InterNet telephony allowed in India: Call a mobile from computer in India

August 18th, 2008 by admin171 views ||  |  No Comments »

TRAI has permitted the ISPs to provide Internet telephony which means they can terminate Internet telephony calls on PSTN (public switched telecom network) and vice-versa.

Till now it was possible to call from a computer to another computer over the internet. However it was not possible to call from a computer to a mobile and vice versa. The situation is set to change now.

This seems to be a good news for ISPs and also for mobile handset makers. However this may serious drop in profitability of telecom players in the long run.

Condom themed mobile ringtone

August 18th, 2008 by admin149 views ||  |  No Comments »

Seems like our averseness to use the word condom is a major reason for pread of HIV in India. In an attempt to make the word ‘condom’ more socially acceptable BBC World Service, has created a free ringtone for your mobile phone that chants like “condom, condom…”

The ringtone is actually quite creative and I actually like it. So go ahead and give it a try.

Kingfisher to allow mobile phones on flights

August 18th, 2008 by admin69 views ||  |  No Comments »

If Mr mallya has his way then you can talk to your sweetheart even in the middle of a flight. Usage of mobile phones is not allowed once the flight readies for take-off as the mobile phone signals may interfere with the navigation controls of the aircraft. However kingfisher seems to have got a solution for the same. They are planning to offer the facility on their international flights after getting a go ahead from the govt. The aviation industry can do with some good news for a change.

Shaadi.com on Vodafone

August 17th, 2008 by admin76 views ||  |  No Comments »

Shaadi.com has announced a strategic partnership with Vodafone to launch a matrimonial service. By calling or SMSing Shaadi to 57007 or even by clicking on shaadi.com link on Vodafone live! portal, you will find your prospective matches.

This clearly follows our long held belief that all utility sites like job, matrimony and classifieds will eventually migrate to mobiles.

Do let us know your experience with the same if you happen to use this service first hand.

Why I love the iphone

August 17th, 2008 by admin92 views ||  |  No Comments »

This post on phonearena is asking its readers if they should buy the iphone. The body of the post seems to clearly suggest that iphone is not that great a buy. While I think the iphone may be a bit expensive in India, I have no doubt that the iphone is an awesome product to own.

It will be unfair to compare the iphone to other handsets along familiar features. Because the strength of iphone is not its features but the ease with which you can use the features provided and the enhanced usability.

Look at a simple feature like sms. Iphone allows you to store the sms messages with any person as a conversation. Something like your google chat history. To say that iphone has sms and so does an entry level phone will be unfair.

Iphone has all the features of an ipod built in itself. Considering that I had happily paid 16k for a 80gb ipod only 8 months back, this deal looks like a real bargain to me.

Another great and under appreciated strength of the iphone is the apps store. I think steve jobs is using his experience with the failure of mac to score over his rivals. By opening up the apps stores to independent thrid party developers, he is making sure that you do not have to depend on apple to fulfill any need of yours. Trust me all of us are going to be surprised by the ability of the apps developers to come up with really cool and useful apps.

So go ahead and buy an iphone if you can. You will not be sorry that you did.

The price of iphone in India

August 17th, 2008 by admin144 views ||  |  2 Comments »

There has been lot of speculation about the price of iphone in India. The price of iphone 3G in US was in the range of 200$ or 8,000Rs. So we were expecting the iphone to cost anywhere between 20-25k.

However compareindia, a famos comparison shopping sitee is reporting that the 8 GB version of the iPhone 3G will cost Rs 31,000, while the 16 GB version will cost between Rs 36,000 and 37,000.

The price seems way too high. It is possible to get iphone for 14k-16k in US and use them in India after unlocking the same. I will be surprised if there will be many takers for the official iphone from airtel or vodafone at these price points.

P.S: The price reported here are obtained from compareindia.com and are not announced by airtel or vodafone. I will update the post as soon as the official price is released. Please subscribe to the feed to get the update.

Is the information on your mobile private??

August 16th, 2008 by admin81 views ||  |  No Comments »

Obviously..people will need access to your mobile handset to check your sms or view that video clip. And your have the handset by your side all the time.

Think again. With internet and bluetooth present on your mobile, mobile privacy seems to be the first casualty. There are softwares available on the net that allow others to read your sms,your contact list or view the video clip without access to your handset.

Do not believe me. Check out the following sites that allow anyone to buy the software from the internet itself.

1.e-stealth.com
2.mobile-spy.com
3.thespyphone.com: this one does not even need an active gprs or bluetooth connection to spy on you
4.phonestealth.com

Internet Explorer for mobiles coming soon

August 16th, 2008 by admin72 views ||  |  No Comments »

telecomtiger.com is reporting that microsoft has plans to introduce the internet explorer for mobiles soon.

With many of the websites designed for ie even today, I think internet explorer will have a clear advantage even on the mobile platform. Seems like we are heading for one more round of browser war. This time on the mobile platform.

How to locate subhiksha mobile store in India

August 13th, 2008 by admin282 views ||  |  No Comments »

The lowest price advertisement from subhiksha seems to have generated quite a lot of interest amongst users. However locating a subhiksha mobile store seems to be quite difficult especially as the website of subhiksha is under construction. Hence the best bet to locate a subhiksha store in India is to send a sms to 56161 with the text bachat (Please note the space etween bachat and pincode).

I have tried it for mumbai. If you try this method then do let me know the result in the comments.

Planning to buy an iphone? Sell your second hand mobile first

August 11th, 2008 by admin180 views ||  |  No Comments »

The iphone is getting launched on 22nd of august. Many of you must be planning to buy one. However have you thought about what to do with your existing handset? Here are 3 reasons you must sell the mobile phone in the second hand market first.

1. The least you will get for the most basic mobile phone will be higher than 1,000 Rs. Not a small amount for sure.
2. It is a good way to get to know someone interesting ;-) you know what I mean. Use the above 1,000 Rs to take him/ her on a date.
3. However the most important reason is the environment, and that is why I am writing this post. With the ever increasing usage, disposal of mobile phones has become a major challenge and poses a serious threat. Increasing the usage of second hand mobiles is a good way to combat this issue.
4. You will enable someone else to own a good brand mobile for a lower price. Hopefully this will reduce the inflation. Thereby contributing to the growth of our economy. I am such an optimist :)

Search google on your mobile with sms

August 9th, 2008 by admin135 views ||  |  1 Comment »

All of us are completely dependent on google. Trying to imagine a day without google has become really difficult. People with a higher end mobile phones have the luxury of accessing the internet on the mobile. What about us lesser mortals who do not have a high end mobile or who do not have an internet connection?

Well if you can not go to google, then google will come to you. Just type the search string as sms and send it to 54664. Google shall reply back with relevant information. I have tried the service with the search string of “mumbai movies”.

This is a premium service though. And the sms will cost you 2-3 Rs depending upon the service provider. You can read more details here
