Typically there is no requirement for buying a handset. You need documents to get a connection. However you need a set of document to purchase the iphone from airtel. This requirement is there as you will need to get a connection along with the handset.

If you are an existing Airtel customer then you just need to carry your existing Airtel SIM card. However if you are not an existing airtel customer then you will need the following documents to buy Airtel Post Paid or Prepaid connection:
1) Proof of Identity and Address (Passport/Arms License /Driving License/Photo Identity Card having Address/Election Commission Id Card/ Ration Card with Photo and Address of person whose photo is affixed/CGHS/ECHS Card)

Airtel announces iphone price

August 20th, 2008 by admin273 views ||  |  1 Comment »

And it is same as the price offered by Vodafone :( i.e 8 GB (Black) for Rs 31000 and 16GB (White & Black) for Rs 36100. I was rather hoping that they will offer the iPhone cheaper than vodafone so that I can get one with binaryday’s adsense earnings.

iphone data plans for existing vodafone users in India

August 20th, 2008 by admin147 views ||  |  No Comments »

Vodafone has introduced 3 different postpaid plans for its iPhone users. However existing vodafone postpaid customers may opt to continue with their current plan. However if they want to have the ability to do data browsing on the iphone, they will have to opt for one of the data plans introduced by vodafone.

 There are 3 distinct data plans :- iPhone Data Pack 199,  iPhone Data Pack 499  and iPhone Data Pack 699.

iPhone Data Pack 199 The user shall have to pay a monthly rental of 199Rs. For 199Rs you get a free data usage of 50mb per month. Any additional data usage shall be charged at 5p/ 10kb or 5Rs/mb.

iPhone Data Pack 499 The user shall have to pay a monthly rental of 499Rs. For 499Rs you get a free data usage of 250mb per month. Any additional data usage shall be charged at 5p/ 10kb or 5Rs/mb.

iPhone Data Pack 699 The user shall have to pay a monthly rental of 699Rs. For 699Rs you get a free data usage of 600mb per month. Any additional data usage shall be charged at 5p/ 10kb or 5Rs/mb.

From 199 to 499 you get 200 mb of free data usage extra. At 5rs per mb that is 1000Rs of data usage for additional payment of 300Rs. Similarly from 499 to 699 plan you get 350mb worth 1750Rs free for 200Rs more. So clearly spend good amount of time in deciding which plan will be required by you.

Most important point: Make sure not to exceed the free data usage limit. Else at 5Rs/mb you will be dead.

Vodafone Postpaid plans for iPhone in India

August 20th, 2008 by admin160 views ||  |  No Comments »

Vodafone has come up with postpaid plans for the iphone in India. They have 3 different plans with monthly rentals of 499Rs, 799 Rs and 999 Rs. All the 3 plans have identical tariff structure of 60p/min for local call and 1r/min for std calls. You will get 199,249 and 299 Rs worth free call time under the 3 plans respectively.

The data browsing charge is priced at 5p/10kb or 5 Rs per 1 mb. That looks too expensive. However vodafone is providing 50mb, 250mb and 800mb of free browsing for the 3 plans. So anyone using the Iphone 999 plan will not need any additional data. That makes the plan look attractive to me.

TRAI recommeds unrestricted internet telephony services in India

August 19th, 2008 by admin150 views ||  |  No Comments »

TRAI has allowed ISP (Internet Service Providers) to offer unrestricted internet telephony services in India. What this essentially means is that users will be able to call (dial) to mobiles and landline phones in India from their computers. Under existing norms, a voice call can travel between two computers but not from a computer to a mobile or a fixed phone.

As per the TRAI recommendations, the STD service providers would be connected to ISPs through public internet for the purpose and the two service providers would have mutual agreement for the same.

The Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), a technical arm of Department of Telecom, will work out the number plan for the ISPs to enable them to offer telephone services. “Telephone numbers from identified blocks shall be allocated to ISPs, Unified Access Service Providers, Basic Service Providers and Cellular Mobile Service Providers for internet telephony,” TRAI said.

With a view to make internet telephony secure, TRAI said, all ISPs interested to provide unrestricted internet telephony would have to install “Lawful Interception” equipments.

I believe that this will be more beneficial to corporate customers than to normal users (retail customers) like us. Reasons:

  • India has low internet penetration with only 1.1 crore connections with even lesser number of broadband connections.
  • Net speed of 256kbps is classified as broadband in India, which is not sufficient for decent voice clarity.
  • Even after having a decent broadband connection, calls from PC to mobiles/fixed phones won’t be free. Users will definitely be charged per call.
  • STD Call rates are already very low in India. In fact call rates are so low that even ISPs won’t be able to lower them significantly. Almost all the mobile operators now have plans where STD rates are same as Local rates.
  • It is always convenient to call from a phone or mobile than to switch on you PC, connect to internet and then dial the number.

For corporate customers, where the volume of calls is really high this is definitely a boon because they can now deploy VOIP Phones over their Wide Area Networks and can virtually run their internal phone usage for free, independent of the phone service providers. BPO and IT companies will really benefit from this. This will bring in substantial cost savings for these companies. “This is a welcome step particularly for the Indian IT-BPO industry,” said the National Association of Software and Service Companies, or NASSCOM.

But this will mean a loss in revenues for the telecom operators and it will definitely not be welcomed by them. But I believe that they should have a long term perspective of the view. Rather than opposing this they should provide better broadband internet connectivity to the users. In fact as I see the way forward will be rolling out of WiMAX services in coming years, with wi fi enabled mobiles and voice communication moving over from switching networks to IP (internet) networks.

This is a welcome recommendation from TRAI and lets hope government approves it fast.

TRAI asks GSM players to link to Reliance

August 19th, 2008 by admin58 views ||  |  No Comments »

TRAI seems to be too keen on ensuring a smooth entry of Reliance into the GSM domain. It is planning to ask the Department of Telecom (DoT) to take action against GSM operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular if they fail to connect their networks to Reliance Communications’ (RCOM) GSM network by August 21, 2008.

The GSM operators say that their existing interconnection agreement with Reliance covers only the CDMA technology and Reliance needs to enter into a fresh set of agreements for its GSM service. However Reliance is of the view that the existing interconnect agreement covers both GSM and CDMA services.

It is not clear who is wrong. However TRAI’s promptness in directing the other players looks strange to me. This is an agreement between 2 parties. They should settle it themselves. It is not like Reliance did not have enough time to sort out these things with the GSM players.

Watch Akbar Birbal Remixed on idea cellular

August 19th, 2008 by admin74 views ||  |  No Comments »

Idea cellular and Rajshri production have come together for one of the most innovative experiments in mobile value added services. The experiment is Akbar Birbal Remixed, a funny show that shall be available to the idea cellular subscribers on their mobile.

The Akbar Birbal Remixed show features the loud and brazen Mumbai Don, Akbar Anna and his intelligent, witty and ever-bankable right hand, Birbal Bhaiya. The show will have 90 episodes of 3 minutes each. The shows are absolutely funny.

Subscribers of idea cellular can choose from three payment plans - pay per download for Rs 15 per episode; weekly subscription of Rs 50 per week; and monthly subscription of Rs 150 per month. 15 rs for a 3 minute show sounds a bit too high. The pricing seems to be the only spoiler in this awesome idea.

However people who want a laugh while on the move will not mind paying 15Rs for a good laugh. Or you can watch the show for free at rajshri.com

Find lost mobile phone with Airtel Lost Mobile Tracking System (LMTS)

August 19th, 2008 by admin487 views ||  |  No Comments »

A loss of mobile handset is a nightmare for many mobile users. You loose all your contacts, sms messages, pictures and videos.

Airtel provides a really useful solution to find lost mobile phone in the form of Lost Mobile Tracking System. The service costs you Rs30 per month. However you will need a GPRS eneabled handset and Airtel Live must be enabled on your mobile phone. After that download the software at http://airtel.in/wps/wcm/connect/Airtel.in/airtel.in/home/foryou/mobile/prepaid/services/lmts/download/ and activate the service through “Services for You” link.

The software acts in the background. Once the new owner of the mobile changes the SIM card, it will send a sms with the new number to pre selected numbers.

However looks like the software will be useless if the new owner formats the mobile before changing the SIM. For these scenarios a more usefu solution will be to use the mobile tracer to find your lost mobile

Make money with iphone apps store : Great oppurtunity for Indian Techies

August 18th, 2008 by admin179 views ||  |  3 Comments »

I am not sure if Techies in India have realized the oppurtunity that the iphone store presents to us. I think this is one ares that is begging to be dominated by us. Surprisingly I have not seen much enthusiasm about the same in the Indian blogosphere.

Think about it. The apps store has sold apps worth more than 30 million $ in 1 month alone. Even after taking apple’s cut from this the developers have made 21 million $ or 80 crore rupees in 1 month!!!! source

Why do I say this domain is begging to be dominated by us? Because of the long tail phenomenon. The top 10 apps accounted for only 9 million or just 30% of the total.

It means that there are lot of apps that made small amount of money. What is one strength that is required to win a fragmented market like this?? It is the ability to be the low cost producer. Which country has that capacity in abundance?? That is the logic for my conclusion that the iphone apps market shall be completely dominated by Indian techies.

Only if we wake up to the oppurtunity fast enough. The window of oppurtunity remains open till the apps market gets its dominant player.
