The great idea contest : Chance to win 5,000 dollars

April 8th, 2008 by admin250 views ||  |  3 Comments »

Do you have a great idea? inc.com is conducting an ideas contest that gives you an oppurtunity to earn 5,000$. Well it is not that simple. This is more of a business plan contest that needs you to desribe your idea, the target market, need to be served etc.

The ideas will be published on the website. I see this as a great oppurtunity to look at some really great ideas. Moreover this may be a great platform to find out if there are other people out there who believe in similar ideas.

If you do win the prize, then do remember to treat me ;-)

Importance of retaining traffic

April 6th, 2008 by admin160 views ||  |  1 Comment »

There is just too much of importance given to getting new traffic. Most of the webmasters seem to miss the importance of one of the most critical aspects of growth of a website. Retaining your users and making them repeat users. I have just created an excel spreadsheet to prove the point.

If you play with the spreadsheet a little, you will see that if your website manages to convert 50% of the traffic, then in 3 years you will get less than 1 lakh users. However if you manage to retain 100% of visitors then you shall get more than 7 lakh users. 100% may be a bit unrealistic. However even if you manage to retain only 75% of your users then your site would have recieved close to 3 lakh users.

I hope the data below would manage to convince you that retaining the visitors is the single most important requirement for the growth of a website/blog.

Strategies that we use to get more traffic

April 6th, 2008 by admin177 views ||  |  1 Comment »

It has been more than 3 years since we started mywalkin. With more than 24,000 feedburner subscribers and more than 1,00,000 unique visitors a month, it has been a reasonable success. I had never bothered to understand how we managed to get those users. However recently I did some analysis as I want to use the learnings from mywalkin, to get more traffic for binaryday.

If you are starting a new website or blog, then you have basically 3 different options to get traffic. Direct advertisement, Search engine Optimization and creating a word-of-mouth buzz.

Direct advertisement has the advantage of providing immediate results. If you spend X amount of money then you will get Y number of traffic. If the concept needs some initial userbase to start working like some digg like concept or forum or social network, then this is a must. However direct advertisement makes your website grow in an arithmatic progression. i.e if your advertisement budget allows you to get 200 users per month, then the growth of your site will look like 200,400,600, 800 and so on. CPC and CPM advertisement methods shall fall under this category.

Search engine Optimization looks like the most talked about method. If you are not in a highly competitive domain then it is not very difficult to rank high for target terms. It does need some initial investment both time and money. However once the work is over, much less investment is required for maintaining the position. On the downside, you will be completely at the mercy of all mighty google. It takes some time to take effect. While getting to the top 10 may be possible, moving up from there becomes a really big challenge. So with search engine optimization the traffic graph will look something like 0,0,0,50,70,100,170,300,300,300.

Word of Mouth This is perhaps one of the most important and most difficult strategy to use. And this is what differentates between a good site and a great site. For this strategy to work, you shall need to make your customers to talk about you. You can do that through quality and innovative features. However if you manage to achieve this, then this is effectivly a zero cost method of getting traffic. The importance of this method is that it makes your traffic increase in a geometric progression. assuming you manage to convince 10% of your visitors to talk about your product, your traffic numbers will look like 100,110,121,133,146,161,177,195,214 i.e the traffic will double in 8 months.

DotGyan - There’s more to selected text than cut/copy & paste

April 4th, 2008 by Vineet169 views ||  |  2 Comments »

I have been working on this idea of “There’s more to selected text than cut/copy & paste” for past few weekends.
What do we do when you come across a word whose meaning you don’t know or a term you want to know more about while reading a Charles Dicken’s or Shakespeare’s work or may be just a newspaper?
Most of us simply ignore it or think “I’ll lookup in a dictionary when I get up” and we never do that. There are a very chosen few of us who purposely keep a dictionary with us while reading.
Consider this scenario while reading on the web. It’s lot easier, right? just select the term, right click, copy, open a new window, open google, paste and then wait for result. Fast enough but also irritating enough to break your concentration.
I came up with a widget to try to solve this problem. As of now I call it “DotGyan”. It allows you to search a word/term there and then with least interference in your reading pleasure.

It works like this…
1. You see a word like lagniappe whose meaning you don’t know. The word can be there any where on the blog or webpage.
2. Select the word as you would do for cut/copy & paste.
3. You see a dot at the end of your selection.
4. Click this dot.
5. You get the options (on what I call a “GyanBox”) to search the term in Google, Wikipedia or Wiktionary.
6. Click on one of the three options.
7. Rest you will get it yourself.

TRY THIS OUT, RIGHT HERE ON BINARYDAY !

What if I don’t want to search the selected term? Simple, just ignore the dot. It will go away in 3 seconds.
What if I want to edit the selected text before searching? Well, just edit it in the text box you see on the GyanBox.

Some may argue that we already have such softwares. True but almost all of them are available as browser plugins and how many of us actually know about such plugins and even if we know how many of us install them? Also plugins are browser dependent. DotGyan is browser independent and it shifts the installation trouble from user to web-master.

I have installed DotGyan on BinaryDay. Go ahead, Try it out Please! (Just select any word or phrase and click the dot)
DotGyan is right now in a very initial phase. Please give your valuable comments and suggestions as comments to this post or mail me at vineet7kumar@gmail.com.
Your comments and suggestions can pertain to anything from looks & colors to any new feature you would like to have. Also suggest some good names for the widget.

Team BinaryDay will be more than happy to hear from you :)

PS: If you are a blogger or a webmaster and would like to install DotGyan on your blog or page please drop me a mail at vineet7kumar@gmail.com … I will love to have DotGyan on your Blog or page.

PS: Currently safari browser and Internet explorer less that IE7 are not supported.

One Red Paperclip … Kyle MacDonald

April 4th, 2008 by Vineet133 views ||  |  No Comments »

This one is not actually related to technology but about the skills of marketing.
Kyle MacDonald began with one red paper clip on March 28, 2005. By July 5, 2006, a chain of bartering had ultimately led to trading a movie role for a two-story farmhouse in Kipling, Saskatchewan….
Read on more here on wikipedia how a series of barters converted a paper clip to a farm house.
Mind blowing, Right?

How important is an idea for a startup? … There’s something more important than that

March 31st, 2008 by Vineet174 views ||  |  2 Comments »

I have been working on , rather I should say Thinking on loads of ideas for starting a startup since past more than one year but it’s only now that I realized where I was wrong. I always had many ideas…some of them really good (I can say that because when I did some research after having an idea, I found that someone had already just started a startup based on a similar idea … and most of them are doing good) but my fault was that I never executed any of my ideas… I just thought upon it , discussed with friends, did some research and by then I would have another idea and I thought it better to be what I had started on. So I think it’s not the idea but its execution and completion that is important.
Read this post on ideas vs judgement and execution to get the point in a better way.

My Experiment with google image search-I: Result-I

March 30th, 2008 by admin200 views ||  |  1 Comment »

I am doing some research on google image search to learn image search optimization. As part of the experiment, I had uploaded 2 images yesterday in a post with text string xyzabcabpq, 1 image named xyzabcabpq and another image with the alt text xyzabcabpq. The initial result is in.

Text gets indexed faster than image

A search for xyzabcabpq in the web search returns the binaryday page. However image search does not return any result yet. Surprisingly even blog search does not return any result. Waiting to see who wins the competition between blog search and image search. Keep checking the SEO Experiment category till then.

My Experiment with google image search-I

March 30th, 2008 by admin167 views ||  |  No Comments »

I have just recently realized the importance of google image search. I have been trying to find more on google image search engine optimization. Surprisingly very less literature is present on the topic.

Hence I am starting my own experiments on image search engine optimization. I have uploaded 2 images of apple air. I will be targetting the term xyzabcabpq. That is because there is no other search result for that term.

One image has a file name same as the search term. The other file has alt text as that. let us see which one wins.

xyzabcabpq

Show your pagerank on your page

March 30th, 2008 by admin188 views ||  |  No Comments »

Pagerank of a blog or site is an important input for text advertisers and people interested in exchanging link with you. You can attract potential advertisers by displaying your pagerank on your webpage. You can see a demo just below the feedburner box on the sidebar of this page.

I have written a small tool to do so for any webpage. You can show a similar image by adding a single line to your blog. Add the following within php to display your pagerank

include “http://www.binaryday.com/pagerank.php?url=[your site url]”

wordpress 2.5 released

March 30th, 2008 by admin1,784 views ||  |  1 Comment »

After almost 6 months of work by the entire wordpress community and some delayed release deadlines, wordpress 2.5 got released. you can download it here

Some important features of wordpress 2.5 are

Table layout has not been changed in this release, so many plugins are expected to work fine with 2.5.

Few-click plugin upgrades — if the plugins you use are part of the plugin directory then wordpress automatically downloads and installs the upgrade for you.

Friendlier visual post editor — The editor doesn’t mess with your code anymore. version 3.0 of TinyMCE is used, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML.

Concurrent editing protection if you use a multi-author blogs, you might have been frustrated if you ever tried to edit a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done.

How to increase your feedburner subsciber numbers?

March 30th, 2008 by admin160 views ||  |  2 Comments »

Feedburner subscriber base is the most assured way to increase number of repeat users. feedburner stat also acts as a good proxy for knowing how many readers find the blog really cool. That is the reason I keep checking my feedburner stat and keep thinking about ways to increase that number.

Below are 2 methods that I find are the most useful to increase the feedburner subscriber number.

Ask them to subscribe You will be surprised how effective is that “if you liked this post, please consider subscribing to my feed” link. If you think about it, the reader is most likely to subscribe to your feed after going through a really good article.

Convert the Unverified Subscribers This is one data that really surprised me. If you have a feed subscription service for quite sometime, you will be really surprised by how many people who subscribed to your feed never confirmed the subscription. It is normally as high as 40% of your total active subscriber base. These are people who liked your blog (why else they will subscribe at the first place?).

So go ahead and remind them to just verify the subscription. In my experience the best way is to subscribe their email ids once more. They will get a confirmation mail. At least in my case 80% of the people confirm the subscription.

If you found this post useful, you know what to do. :)
