How to choose a TLD for your domain name?

Every domain name has two parts. One before the dot(.), and after it. In the previous post, I had talked about points to consider while choosing the domain name i.e the first part. However the second part is important part as well.

The second part of the domain name or the part after the . is known as the TLD. You can choose from among several TLDs for your website.

dot com (.com) is the most preferred one by me. Simply because majority of websites use this TLD and hence people just have the tendency of typing .com after the domain name. If you use some other TLD for your domain name, then you shall have to keep reminding the users that your site is not .com.

Using country specific TLD in domain name You can choose a TLD specific to your country as well like .in for India. Google seems to give a higher priority to country specific TLDs for searches done in the respective google domain.

Register multiple TLDs for your domain name If you see your users liking your website, then it is a good idea to register multiple domain names for your website. Keep one main site and redirect the other urls to this one. That will ensure that noone else can take your traffic away.

CAT 2008 Notification: Common Admission Test 2008 Dates

The all important CAT for the academic year 2009-11 will be held on November 16, 2008.

The CAT Bulletins, which contains application form can be purchased from July 14, 2008 till August 8, 2008 from select Axis bank branches, and in special cases from IIMs directly by August 13, 2008. The last date of submission of CAT forms is September 5.

shaddi, shadi, or shaadi : The issue of wrong spellings

I was doing some analysis of indian matrimonial wesites. I wanted to compare the user profiles of shaadi. However I just realized that almost as many people search for shaddi or shadi to reach at shaadi. Ufortuately shaadi does ot rank 1 on google for these terms. There is actually another site by the name of shadi.com which ranks 1 for shadi.

Just shows why you should think hard before bookig a domain name.

SMSGupshup / Webaroo Raises Rs 40 Crore Funding

Indian websites seem to be making a lot of waves. After mKhoj SMSGupshup just got a Rs 40 Crore Funding. They sure needed that money for the servers and for the free sms messages. The fundingwill go a long way in scaling up the site as they seem to be spending more than half that amount in a year. I doubt if they can ever earn that much money with advertisements alone.

I have been researching about websites that allow you to download youtube videos. I was extremely impressed with vixy.net as it allowed me to convert the video into several formats includig avi,divx,mp3,mpeg4 and 3gp.

However I just got to know that it is not the only one. There are number of online resources that allow you to do so. So here is a list of some free youtube converters.

vixy.net is the best site to download youtube videos in avi format

You never know when your favorite videos will be taken down from youtube. before that happens you should download them and keep them on your hard drive. However youtube does not allow download of videos. Fortunately there are large number of websites that allow you to download youtube videos.

There is a problem with these videos though. They are mostly in flv format. You can download a flv player. However when you transfer the file to some other system you will get into the same problem again.

That is why I like vixy.net. It allows you to convert the video into several formats includig avi,divx,mp3,mpeg4 and 3gp.

Multiple groups feature available on smsgupshup

One of the most missed features on smsgupshup was the ability to create multiple groups. I do not want to send the same message to my family and freinds. Even within freinds I am part of different groups. Seems like people at smsgupshup are listening to the users. They have now introduced the multiple groups feature.

Personally I like dhingana the most because of its clean interface. Microsoft releases office specification

Microsoft is providing open connections to Windows Vista, Office 2007, and many other high-volume products and additional information to enable software developers better interact with these Microsoft products. O the face of it, it looks like a move to keep the regulators happy. However my view is this is an attempt by microsoft to attract developers away from facebook,google etc.

This is a great oppurtunity to create some really good applications. Considerig the massive userbase of the products, the potential looks huge. See the released documents here. It will be fun to see the reaction of the developers to this.
