Speed up gmail

May 5th, 2008 by Sita | No Comments »

I never thought that I will ever worry about speeding up gmail. It has always been faster than I ever needed. However past few days I am at my native place. I have been accessing the internet through a reliance netconnect card. And unfortunately this has been painstakingly slow at the best and plain dead at the worst :(

The frustration of waiting forever to read my emails led me to search for ways to speed up my gmail. Here are a few steps that I have been using to speed up gmail.

Avoid automatic browser check by using this url http://mail.google.com/mail/?nocheckbrowser

You can use the mobile version of gmail at http://mail.google.com/mail/x/cm6v0×0kvrf5-/?f=1 Since it is designed for mobiles, it is really fast

or you can use the html version of gmail at http://mail.google.com/mail/h/5rfigl1ekf0l/?zy=f&f=1

15 most useful gmail proxy sites

April 25th, 2008 by Sita | 2 Comments »

Companies are increasingly blocking the access to popular sites like gmail. Following is a list of proxies that you can use to access gmail at workplace, incase gmail is banned at your office.

Proxies that I have been using for long
http://polysolve.com/
http://www.yoyahoo.com
http://www.myglite.com

Proxies that I found out through research

http://www.browseprox.com I like this proxy for gmail a lot as this does not have many pop-up advertisements. However it has lots of contextual advertisements.

http://www.browser9.com

http://btunnel.com I am a little skeptic about using this proxy as the advertisements on the site look like those on malware proxies.

http://bypassgenie.com/ Looks like a good proxy website for accessing gmail. However the site was not working while I was trying to access it.

http://www.filtersneak.com I find this a little more trust worthy as it warns you about not supporting https protocol.

Importance of retaining traffic

April 6th, 2008 by Sita | 1 Comment »

There is just too much of importance given to getting new traffic. Most of the webmasters seem to miss the importance of one of the most critical aspects of growth of a website. Retaining your users and making them repeat users. I have just created an excel spreadsheet to prove the point.

If you play with the spreadsheet a little, you will see that if your website manages to convert 50% of the traffic, then in 3 years you will get less than 1 lakh users. However if you manage to retain 100% of visitors then you shall get more than 7 lakh users. 100% may be a bit unrealistic. However even if you manage to retain only 75% of your users then your site would have recieved close to 3 lakh users.

I hope the data below would manage to convince you that retaining the visitors is the single most important requirement for the growth of a website/blog.

Strategies that we use to get more traffic

April 6th, 2008 by Sita | 1 Comment »

It has been more than 3 years since we started mywalkin. With more than 24,000 feedburner subscribers and more than 1,00,000 unique visitors a month, it has been a reasonable success. I had never bothered to understand how we managed to get those users. However recently I did some analysis as I want to use the learnings from mywalkin, to get more traffic for binaryday.

If you are starting a new website or blog, then you have basically 3 different options to get traffic. Direct advertisement, Search engine Optimization and creating a word-of-mouth buzz.

Direct advertisement has the advantage of providing immediate results. If you spend X amount of money then you will get Y number of traffic. If the concept needs some initial userbase to start working like some digg like concept or forum or social network, then this is a must. However direct advertisement makes your website grow in an arithmatic progression. i.e if your advertisement budget allows you to get 200 users per month, then the growth of your site will look like 200,400,600, 800 and so on. CPC and CPM advertisement methods shall fall under this category.

Search engine Optimization looks like the most talked about method. If you are not in a highly competitive domain then it is not very difficult to rank high for target terms. It does need some initial investment both time and money. However once the work is over, much less investment is required for maintaining the position. On the downside, you will be completely at the mercy of all mighty google. It takes some time to take effect. While getting to the top 10 may be possible, moving up from there becomes a really big challenge. So with search engine optimization the traffic graph will look something like 0,0,0,50,70,100,170,300,300,300.

Word of Mouth This is perhaps one of the most important and most difficult strategy to use. And this is what differentates between a good site and a great site. For this strategy to work, you shall need to make your customers to talk about you. You can do that through quality and innovative features. However if you manage to achieve this, then this is effectivly a zero cost method of getting traffic. The importance of this method is that it makes your traffic increase in a geometric progression. assuming you manage to convince 10% of your visitors to talk about your product, your traffic numbers will look like 100,110,121,133,146,161,177,195,214 i.e the traffic will double in 8 months.

wordpress 2.5 released

March 30th, 2008 by Sita | 1 Comment »

After almost 6 months of work by the entire wordpress community and some delayed release deadlines, wordpress 2.5 got released. you can download it here

Some important features of wordpress 2.5 are

Table layout has not been changed in this release, so many plugins are expected to work fine with 2.5.

Few-click plugin upgrades — if the plugins you use are part of the plugin directory then wordpress automatically downloads and installs the upgrade for you.

Friendlier visual post editor — The editor doesn’t mess with your code anymore. version 3.0 of TinyMCE is used, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML.

Concurrent editing protection if you use a multi-author blogs, you might have been frustrated if you ever tried to edit a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done.

Read more about the features here

How to increase your feedburner subsciber numbers?

March 30th, 2008 by Sita | 2 Comments »

Feedburner subscriber base is the most assured way to increase number of repeat users. feedburner stat also acts as a good proxy for knowing how many readers find the blog really cool. That is the reason I keep checking my feedburner stat and keep thinking about ways to increase that number.

Below are 2 methods that I find are the most useful to increase the feedburner subscriber number.

Ask them to subscribe You will be surprised how effective is that “if you liked this post, please consider subscribing to my feed” link. If you think about it, the reader is most likely to subscribe to your feed after going through a really good article.

Convert the Unverified Subscribers This is one data that really surprised me. If you have a feed subscription service for quite sometime, you will be really surprised by how many people who subscribed to your feed never confirmed the subscription. It is normally as high as 40% of your total active subscriber base. These are people who liked your blog (why else they will subscribe at the first place?).

So go ahead and remind them to just verify the subscription. In my experience the best way is to subscribe their email ids once more. They will get a confirmation mail. At least in my case 80% of the people confirm the subscription.

If you found this post useful, you know what to do. :)

Check your gmail messages without opening your browser

March 18th, 2008 by Sita | No Comments »

You don’t have to log into Gmail every time you want to see if you’ve got mail. Google’s gmail notifier is an application that can alert you if you have new messages. It shows an icon in the system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser.

You can Download it here

Alternatively if you use firefox then you may use gmail notifier to read the mails.

Tips & Tricks 1 : I am unable to install software online

March 7th, 2008 by Vineet | No Comments »

I had played (literally) a lot with my system in past 3 years … Had lots of experiences (some really mind blowing) of destroying and repairing my system. Thought of sharing some good ones with you all.

I discovered the cause (one of the probable causes) to this problem (of being unable to install online software) when a few days ago my friend was unable to install adobe reader from adobe’s site on his Windows XP (yes windows, not even Linux !). His system met all the hardware and software pre-requirements. I asked him to check his system’s date. It showed a date of 2005 (This incident happened in Dec 2007). THAT WAS THE PROBLEM.
He adjusted his system’s date and installation was a cake walk. When you try to install a software online the server checks your system’s date and does not install if you have a wrong date…Someone please try installing with a future date…I haven’t tried it… The error shown nowhere tells you about the date problem.
One more thing , your Gtalk will also not work if you have wrong date settings.
If you have to reset your computer’s time every time you boot into it … Please get your BIOS battery changed immediately.
But sometimes disturbing your system’s date and time settings is useful if you want to do some Software piracy… I will stop here ;-) on the issue of piracy.
Wait for more tips and tricks posts … Hope this one was useful.

Why project managers don’t do what they should?

January 26th, 2008 by Sita | No Comments »

So very often we have been frustrated because the manager does not take the obvious path to solve a problem. Rather they tend to take a complicated path, that just aggravates the problem. Like when a project is behind the schedule and the project manager goes out and brings 5 more resources after much fight. If anything it just increases the level of confusion.

In this wonderful post about the mythical man month, Sulkshan talks about how “Assigning more programmers to a project running behind schedule, shall make it even more late“. Then why do the project managers put in more people into a project running late? He might not have read the book but if he has spent anytime in software development, then he has definitely experienced a similar situation.

To understand why managers behave the wat they do, just put yourself in the shoes of a manager. Now assume that your project is running behind schedule. Your manager asks why it is running short and what you are doing about it. The truth is you goofed up and you have no clue about how to fix it. You know it but do you admit it in front of your boss? No way. So you come up with the standard answer that you were given fewer resources than required, that some of your key people left in the middle of the project and without your brilliance the project would have been much more behind the schedule. See you have now converted an adversity into an opportunity to prove how smart you are ;-) Since the project was delayed because of lack of man power, the natural solution is to put more people onto it.

Even the project manager knows that putting more people onto the project will not solve the issue. But the problem is he does not know what will solve the problem. Any clues from your experience??
