Binaryday gets it pagerank back

I had logged into my blogging console to write a post about free cna training and observed that Binaryday has got the little green bar back. The pagerank of binaryday is 2 only. The pagerank is not exactly great considering that this blog has been a pagerank 4 blog in the past and it has earned a lot of good quality backlinks since then. However I am extremely happy considering that the pagerank bar had gone gray for more than 1 and half year now. Google seemed to have penalized Binaryday.

Most importantly, I resolved the issue with a method that can be replicated for any blog suffering from google penalty. I shall write a post about the method soon. For now I am going to celebrate with some Vodka :)

Insights from google seo report card

I have been away from the blog for quite sometime now. However a document released by Google that analyzed seo friendliness of 100 Google products and provides detailed instructions for improving the rankings and click through rate inside the SERP, has managed to get me back to blogging. The document contains sort of official confirmation about some hotly debated seo topics. Here are some seo insights obtained by me from the document.

  1. Title Tag:
    • A descriptive title tag helps search engines to understand the content better
    • Most search engines use 60 characters from the title tag.
    • Search engines may give lesser importance to keywords after a certain point – Keep main keywords to the front.
    • Some users only look at titles – If you skimp on your title tag, you’re missing out on clicks from users who only
scan result titles on a search results page
      Really!! (Page 5)
    • Prefered structure is <title> Brand Name – Target Keywords </title> : Leverage the brand if you have one (Page 6)
    • Do not copy title tag from some other page. (Page 7) Show this example the next time your boss shouts for a wrong copy paste job. Even Googlers use it :)
  2. URL Structure
    • A descriptive url structure helps search engines to understand the content better
    • It plays a part in improving user click through rate
  3. Meta Description Tag
    • description meta tags and keyword meta tags don’t count in Google’s ranking  (official confirmation of what we knew) -Page 9
    • The text from meta description tag is sometimes used for result snippet. Absence of meta description tag may result in non sensical text from the page to be shown as snippet.
    • Fill your two lines – Similar to the title tag, you want to use all of the space given to you in the snippet. You’ll describe your product better to users, have the opportunity for more bolded words, and take up more real estate on the search results page Page-9
    • Missing snippet for a page is a signal that something is wrong like google bot being denied access through robots.txt
  4. Sitelinks
    • Webmasters can improve the chances of getting a sitelink by using 1. Hierarchical site structure, 2. using descriptive anchor text for internal links and 3. avoiding deep nesting of content behind many subdirectories. (p-13)
    • Google’s algorithm for creating sitelinks is not perfect. You should block unappealing sitelinks to get better sitelinks (p-15)
    • Google chooses popular and relevant content as sitelink (p-16)
  5. Consolidating link juice
    • Either 301 redirect or canonical tag can be used to consolidate link juice from different pages showing the same content.  In the entire discussion about duplicate content, the emphasis is on split of link juice and not any duplicate content penalty. Is there a hint there? (p-19)
    • 301 redirect will not help if the page is blocked through robots.txt (p-19)
    • Don’t use 302s when 301s would be more appropriate (p-27) 302 redirect does not consolidate link juice.
    • 301 to the canonical or use the rel=”canonical” link element. Hopefully dobuts about effectiveness of rel=”canonical” tag will be removed now. (p-30)
  6. Heading Tag Use
    • Use of heading tag helps search engines to understand your content better (p-34)
    • Smart use of CSS to get the same effect will not help (p-48)
    • H1 tags are better than H3 (p-48)
  7. Images
    • Link images to the canonical destination pages to consolidate internal link juice (p-39)
    • Appropriate ALT text for linked images help search engines learn about target page and the image itself (p-42)
    • the alt text of images is  treated as anchor text by search engines (p-43)
  8. Internal Anchor Text
    • Use of descriptive anchor text for internal pages helps (p-45)

Please let me know about any point that I might have missed or wrongly interpreted.

Please help this content reach more people with a tweet/sphinn or any other sharing medium of your choice, if you liked it.

My stupidest seo mistake (till date)

Many regular readers of Binaryday will be aware that I have been working on a used bikes website for quite sometime. Around 1 month back I moved binaryday and the used bikes site to a new server on bluehost. While doing some routine seo checkup on the site, I realized that google has not indexed the site since September 15 i.e almost 1 month time!!! A quick check on other sites showed that all sites that had been moved to bluehost, were showing the same issue. I was really scared at this point as that meant google might have flagged off something about my site.

I logged into google webmaster tools and went straight to the crawl stats page. Here is a screenshot of the crawl stat page that confirmed my fear that google has stopped crawling my pages. From an average of 200 pages per day, Google had stopped crawling my pages all together!!!

My next stop was the sitemaps section of google webmaster tool. The sitemap for used mobiles site was showing some stupid error i.e robots.txt unreachable. I never put up a robots.txt file on my website out of my love for GoogleBot. It has always worked fine. What is this new issue??

A quick search on google led me to this file. This is a google webmaster help file.I found the problem at the bottom of the page. It is OK to not have a robots.txt on your site if an attempt to access robots.txt results in a 404 error. However if you do not have a robots.txt file and the server is giving some other error status then google does not crawl your site at all !!!

I have just added a new robots.txt to the site and google has started to access the files. Hope everything will get back to normal soon. This has been one of the stupidest mistakes that I have done in the last 5-6 years. I am confident of going past it in future though. :)

6 websites to get your indian startup profiled

Getting the initial users is one of the most difficult tasks for any startup. If you are targetting online users then a good ranking on google will solve the problem to a good extent. As all of us know getting links from authority websites goes a long way in obtaining a good ranking on Google. The good news is that the following 6 websites specialize in writing about Indian startups. Hence try to get your website profiled on all these 6 and a good amount of your seo work would be completed.

  1. http://www.killerstartups.com/(6)
  2. http://headstart.in/(5)
  3.  http://www.pluggd.in/ (5)
  4. http://www.webyantra.net/ (5)
  5. http://www.yourstory.in (4)
  6. Startups.in (3)

The numbers in bracket represent the pagerank of the website. That is one PR6, 3 PR5 and 1 PR4 and PR3 links each. No website can get a better start in less than 1 week work.

Selecting a domain name : An SEO’s perspective

I have known for quite sometime now that keywords in domain name and domain TLDs are important for SEO. But I been guilty of grossly underestimating the importance of domain name in my seo actions. Big error!!! I have been working on seo of my used mobiles website for quite sometime now. I shall use 2 primary keywords “second hand mobiles” and “used mobiles” to explain the importance of domain name in SEO and how I figured out my mistake.

Exact match domain name

Go to google.co.in and try the keyword “used mobiles”. Around the 6-7 result you will find usedmobiles.com. Click on the link and visit the site!!!!!! Google is stupis enough to think that a parked domain is more relevant than my website that has been linked from at least 4-5 established high trust blogs and websites. The only virtue of usedmobiles.com is the fact that it has an exact matching domain name. Do you need any more proof??

TLD of domain

Now go to google.co.in and try the keyword “second hand mobiles”. The second result is mobile4sale.in. contacthello is at 5-6 position. I have moved down from the 3rd position in the last few days. Sucks :( To be fair mobiles4sale.in is a really good site. However the more I research, the more convnced I am that a major reason of their ranking is their TLD which is .in.

Conclusion

Having spent a good amount of effort in my existing website, I do not want to move to a completely new website. I will fight back inspite of these handicaps. However if you are yet to book your domain name, then take my advice and book a domain with keywords in it and with a TLD specific to the country that you are targetting.

An SEO Dilemma : second hand mobiles in Mumbai or second hand mobiles mumbai

SEO: I have done extensive keyword research and found out that maximum users in mumbai are searching for second hand mobiles using the keyword “second hand mobiles mumbai”. Let us make some changes to our webpage. The term ’second hand mobiles mumbai’ must appear in the title tag, in the h2 tag and 2-3 times inside the body. OK? This is going to be a cakewalk.

Webmaster: But we are already using ’second hand mobiles in Mumbai’ in all those places. What is the problem?

SEO: Man you are not listening carefully. Our users are searching for us without using the ‘in’. Do you get it now, we need to drop the in.

Webmaster: But without the ‘in’ it will be grammatically wrong. How can we use terms that are not correct.

SEO: *%#….@! stupid webmasters!!!!!!!!

I think everyday the seo and content development team of each decent sized website faces questions like this. What do you do when what google likes and what my users like are at loggerheads. The question in the second part of the title is the one that I faced while trying to optimize my used mobile phones site for Mumbai. The problem is aggravated as I happen to be both the webmaster and the seo for the site which means I can not even use the expletives to take out my frustration :( Looking forward to your suggestions to solve the dilemma.

P.S: If you have some additional advice for the above website, you are most welcome. Some other issues I have been facing with the site are

  1. While the site ranks well for second hand mobiles, it is yet to get into the first page for used mobile phones
  2. The difference in ranking on google.co.in and google.com. Already discussed on an earlier post titled missing some easy traffic?
  3. Should I change the recent design of http://www.contacthello.com/mobile/index.php?city=mumbai to http://www.contacthello.com/mobile/index.php#city=mumbai. I shall discuss this point in more detail in my next post.

I have been missing some easy traffic. What about you?

A quick question. What is the no 1 search engine in India? Obviously google.co.in. Next what is the no 2 search engine in India? Yahoo/microsooft? I also thought so, untill I looked at alexa. The second most popular search engine in India is Google.com. The fact that google.com is the second most popular search engine used in India, is important because the search results of google.com and google.co.in is not the same, even when the search is happening from India.

A simple trick to get this easy traffic

Just log into your analytics account and identify the keywords that bring in the maximum traffic. Now try the keyword in google.co.in and google.com. I am sure there will be atleast 5 keywords that rank high in one but not on the other.

Think about it. Already google recognises that your page is good for this keyword. Only thing you need to convince google is that you are relevant for traffic from outside india as well. That should be much easier than creating content for a new keyword, acquiring the necessary links to get the new page to rank well.

Let me know your take on this topic.

5 reasons why Toolbar Pagerank is still important

google pagerankThere is no other seo metric that is as widely tracked by webmasters as the toolbar pagerank. Everytime google updates the same, the entire blogosphere goes crazy. I have no doubt that you have already heard enough arguments about how the toolbar pagerank is for fun purpose alone and we need not give any importance to it. If you are talking about ranking on google alone, then I completely agree with the above. The pagerank of binaryday went down to 0 (zero) around 4-5 months back and since then my traffic has more than doubled.

While toolbar pagerank is not important for Google, it makes a big difference to our life as bloggers because of the following 5 reasons that I will explain in detail in the later part of this post

    1. The attention span of other bloggers is impacted by the toolbar pagerank of your blog
    2. To know if your seo attempts are moving in the right direction
    3. To identify strong pages on your blog and use them to improve ranking of other pages
    4. Sheer bragging value

    Keyword research in action

What is common among my posts regarding rapidshare premium account, core 2 duo vs dual core, gmail proxy, how to remove virus from usb, ntldr missing vista, and free bollywood movies download? I had written all of them after significant amount of keyword research. Each of them get me more than 200 pageviews daily and they bring in a good amount of my total traffic. Goes on to show the power of keyword research.

Free Download Directx 11 with Directx 3D for Windows 7 and Vista

I seem to have found a new interest in technology. After writing a post about free rapidshare premium account yesterday, I am back with a post about free download of Directx 11 for Windows 7. The few people who visit this post regularly for posts related to blogging, need not worry. The reason I am not posting about blogging is I am in the middle of a really good research about twitter. So please bear with these posts about Directx 3D while I complete my research.

Directx 11 for Windows 7 is the latest graphic technology

If Directx 10 was the preferred version for Vista, Directx 11 is the recommended graphic technology for Windows 7. Directx 11 is available as part of technical preview for public testing. It has got several new features. Hence our recommendation is that you must download Directx 11 ASAP.

    Free Download Directx 11

The following are the links to the section on microsoft site from where you can directly download Directx 11.

    • Download Directx 11 SDK here
    • Download Directx 11 End-user runtimes here

    Directx 11 with Directx 3D

The Directx 3D seems to be generating lof of buzz. Honestly I have not been able to figure out what is great about Directx 3D. Please leave a comment if you know the answer. The links to download Directx11 3D are the same as the ones listed above.

SEO Problem: Home page dominating the internal pages

I have been working on a resume website to try out my seo skills and to put my theoretical learnings into practice. My progress on google.com has not been great though the site has started to get some fairly good results on the google.co.in domain for search terms like sample resume, fresher sample resume, java sample resume etc.

While I continue to study the reason for this sharp difference in ranking on google.com and google.co.in, I had decided to try my hand a single word keyword i.e resume. For this purpose I created a specific page about resumes with optimized title tag, meta description, h1,h2 tags and keyword usage etc. The page has been indexed by google for somedays now.

However I am facing a unique issue and on close examination I see that issue being repeated on my other domains as well.

    • My initial content about sample resume was ranking at 90-100 range on Google.
    • Google avoids keeping 2 pages of the same website on the SERP. For really good authority site it puts up 2 links as well
    • Now google seems to be ignoring my new page. Since the original page was not optimized for resume as a keyword, it continues to linger at 90-100 position only.

Have you ever faced an issue like this? What is the solution to this issue?

I will appreciate some links to my sample cover letter page as well. It is right now at 45 position for “sample cover letter” and I shall like to see the effect of external links on the ranking.

    Pages that leak pagerank

If your homepage has a pagerank of 4 and it links out to only 1 outgoing page, then the outgoing page gets all the benefit of the pagerank of your homepage. However if the homepage is linking out to 10 pages then each page will get only 1/10 benefit of the original pagerank. The obvious step is to reduce the number of links on your homepage that are not adding to any ranking increase.

Check your homepage links to any of the following pages and nofollow all of them

    1. About Us page
    2. Contact us page
    3. Feed-subscription link
    4. Logo/Home/Header Keep maximum 1 link and nofollow everything else
    5. Archive page Unless you want to rank for January, february modifiers
    6. Privacy page Especially after the recent change in adsense TOS, you must have added a privacy page. Make it nofollow
    7. Outgoing Links inside your post body Make intelligent use of more tag

Ajith has detailed post about pagerank leak. Do check it for a detailed discussion of the topic

    * I do not mean the toolbar pagerank. I am talking about actual Google pagerank

My secret of getting plenty of traffic using the Long Tail of search revealed

If you have been blogging for sometime and especially if you have been reading some seo blogs, then I am sure that you have heard of the term “Long Tail”. Before I proceed with this post, I will let you on one secret. I can almost guarantee that you can take your blog to at least 1000$ per month by followin the advice listed on this one post alone. Hence even if this is the only post of mine that you are going to read, so be it. But read it very very carefully.

This is going to be a long post. I shall be discussing the following topics in it.

    1. What gives me so much confidence that my advice can be used to easily take any blog to 1000$ pm earning
    2. What is long tail of search
    3. Why is it easy to succeed by targetting the long tail?
    4. The steps to succeeding with the long tail
      • Setting up the blog
      • Identifying long tail keywords
      • Writing a post targetted to long tail keywords
      • Monetizing the long tail
      • A strategy that will increase your chances of success
    5. Improving the performance of the blog post

What gives me so much confidence that my advice can be used to easily take any blog to 1000$ pm earning

I have talked about many seo topics and monetization tricks previously. However I doubt if I have ever sounded as confident as this blog post. It is quite simple though. I am confident because I have done it myself. If you have been reading my blog for sometime, then I am sure that you must have been irritated by my posts about Ron Pratte, Intel core 2 duo and dual core, Catherine Gomez Boxxy, How to format USB drives etc. The fact all those posts as well as my recent posts about Abraham Biggs Suicide Video, Melissa Huckaby and IPL 2009 are all part of my experimentation of getting traffic by taking advantage of the long tail of search. And I have been successful at it beyond my imagination to say the least.

So what exactly is the long tail of search

Many of you must have heard of the 80-20 principle. It basically says that 20% of your customers/product bring in 80% of your sales. 80-20 is the basic rinciple that every large organization runs on. You see if I am a large book store then I need to concentrate on 20% of the titles that bring in 80% of my sales.

The concept of long tail was made popular by Chris Anderson in an article in the Wired magazine. The basic premise is quite simple. The remaining 80% will be good enough for you if your cost of production is low. I will not get into theoretical detail as this is not a post about long tail but rather about how to attract traffic to your blog using this strategy of targetting the long tail.

Why is it easy to succeed by targetting the long tail?

The basic premise of this strategy is quite simple. If I have a new blog, I will find it very difficult to compete with more established blogs for a given keyword. Think of a new blog trying to compete with Digital Inspiration on a technology related blog. It does not matter how great a post you have about twitter, Amit’s post about he forgetting his twitter password will outrank you on Google in all probability. So what do I do?

There are 2 types of blog posts that you can write to take advantage of the long tail.

    1. A detailed post about a very specific topic that target search terms with 3 or more keywords. So since I can not compete with existing websites on the keyword virus, usb or virus usb I write a blog post titled how to remove virus from usb and  Everything you may need to know about how to fix errors in USB Flash drives and how to Format USB Flash. Those long titles are there to target search terms that are 3 or 4 words long.
    2. A post about a topic that established websites have not already written about: Google gets to see around 30% of search terms for the first time on a given day. Many of those are search terms that have become popular only recently. Typically these are news items. However do not write about news items that are going to get coverage from big websites. Rather focus on smaller issues like Melissa Huckaby and  Princess Kemeria Abajobir Abajifar that are going to have a decent amount of interest and not mch competition.

The steps to succeeding with the long tail

The idea of this blog post is not to tell you that you can succeed by focusing on the long tail. Rather I am going to reveal my secret of getting traffic and money by focusing on long tail. I strongly believe that all the steps that I list down below are essential for succeeding with the long tail strategy.

Timing is the most important aspect of success: We shall be removing competition from established websites and blogs by using this strategy. However keep in mind that you still have to compete with 1000s of other blogs for your success. That makes it quite important that you are amongst the first few guys to write about a topic, especially if you are targetting the hot words for your traffic.

Setting up the blog: When I say timing is important, it is not the time of you publishing the post. Since we shall be focusing on Google to get much of this traffic, it is actually the time when Google finally indexes your blog posts. A well designed wordpress theme with some essential plugins like sitemap plugin, all-in-seo plugin will normally do the trick. However to get the maximum benefit your theme must take care of many other issues including avoiding duplicate content issue, ensuring good internal linking etc. Do not worry if you are not too good at SEO. I am working on a wordpress theme that will take care of all these issues. But it will be available to the members of my how to make money with blogging ecourse. The course is absolutely free. So go ahead and signup with your email id alone.

    Identifying long tail keywords

I think this is the single most important trick to succeeding with the long tail strategy is to find out keywords that have decent amount of traffic and not much competition. The simplest way to do this is to monitor google trends. Just go through that page and you will find 100 keywords that you can blog about. You can even target country specific google trend pages. However if you read that last line carefully, you will realize that I said Google trends is the simplest method and not the only method. Some other tricks that I use to find hot keywords includes analyzing submissions to social sites like digg, propeller, indianpad etc and Predicting what keywords will go hot on google trends in 2-3 days hence by going through event calendars like movie schedule, movie releases, valentines day, bloggers’ meet etc. Keywords identified by above methods are not targetted by many other sites. Hence you may use the above tricks to find superior result.

Another method to find long tail keywords is to use google adwords keyword tool. Let us say you want to do a post about seo. Enter the keyword in this tool and it will throw up a large number of terms related to seo. Depending on the level of competition for the keyword, you may choose a particular topic to create your blog post.

Find out low competition terms: It is not enough to identify terms that will have a lot of searches. You need to identify terms on which there is comparatively less competition to worry about. And the number of search results is not an indication of competition. Rather use the methods suggested by me to find out the level of competion for a keyword.

Writing a post targetted to long tail keywords: Ranking on Google is decided based on 2 types of factors off-page factor and on-page factor. Off-page factors include backlinks to your blog, age of your blog etc. While on-page factors include stuff that is on your page like keyword usage, formatting of your post etc. If you have a comparatively new blog you will have a disadvantage in the off-page factor. Hence it becomes extremely important that you make the most of the on-page seo factors. I have covered this topic in depth in my post titled The best way to use keywords on blog post for maximum impact.

Some exclusive tips to increase chances of success dramatically

    1. It is difficult to get links to a blog targetting long-tail keywords. Start your blog on some other topic like make money online or technology, get good number of links and then migrate to long tail keywords.
    2. Alternatively you may mix these posts with some other linkable topics like I do.
    3. Read my Beginners guide to building free backlinks to get free backlinks
    4. Hire me as a consultant to kick start your blog. :) On a serious note I am ready to work on other blogs on a revenue sharing basis.
    5. Avoid the issue of duplicate content by all cost. Never user ctrl+c and ctrl+v. Read others’ posts and then rewrite them in your own english. Do not reproduce the entire post
    6. Make use of images on your posts.

Finally become a member of my how to make money with blogging ecourse. The course is absolutely free. So go ahead and signup with your email id alone. Trust me I shall be revealing at least 3 more secret tips about how to find super hot long tail keywords in the ecourse.

    Ranking with internal links

I had recently made a post about most viewed video on youtube. There is fair amount of competition for the keyword and my post was ranking at >150 on the SERP. However yesterday I linked this post from 2 existing posts and a new post with varied anchor text and today the post has moved into 11th position on SERP. I am going to link my posts about Com surrogate, dual core vs core 2 duo and free bollywood movies to see if internal links can push these posts up in the SERP.

While I am at the topic of ranking with internal links, let me make one thing clear. Wordpress plugins for internal links are good for getting posts indexed. However they are not the best way to use internal links to rank for particular posts. You should always identify relevant posts to create internal links.

Free bollywood movies download and online bollywood movies website where users can watch free movies

I had recently written about most viewed video on youtube. Related research shows that there is a massive demand for free bollywood movies onine. There are many websites that allow users to download free bollywood movies. There is also no dearth of websites to watch online bollywood movies. I have been trying to figure out a feasible business model for starting a website where users can watch free movies. I am not able to find much content related to the legal aspects of the topic. If any of you happen to have any experience in the topic, then please drop me a mail.

Also do you know if working on a seo project for a website which may be illegal is legal or not. My previous posts about romantic hindi songs and romantic hindi movie may get me a project from a site about bollywood hindi movies. I am not sure if it is legal though. What should I do?

Why you need to know what type of backlink your blog needs

I have already posted a technology related posts about com surrogate error and a smm related post about most viewed video on youtube. I shall compensate my regular readers by revealing one of the most useful SEO trick that I have not shared with anyone yet. I have used this trick on several of my blogs and websites to take them to 2000-5000 users a day in less than 6 months.

As I had discussed in my backlink building guide, not all links are equal. That is a well known fact among SEOs. However one thing no SEO blog seems to talk about is the appropriateness of particular type of link based on the lifecycle of blog.

What do I mean by lifecycle of a blog

Your blog may be in one of the following stages on Google index

    1. The blog has just been released. Less than 30 posts have been indexed by Google
    2. Your blog is 2-3 months old. Your posts get indexed on a regular basis. However you are getting no or little traffic from Google
    3. Your blog is more than 6 months old. Your posts get indexed on a regular basis. You get 600-1000 visitors a day from search but mostly from long tail search terms (search terms with 3 or more words).
    4. You have an established blog. You rank in the first page for most keywords as soon as you make a post.

    Link Building stragtegy

    • If you have a recently launched blog (less than 2 months old) then Google will be looking at you with suspicion. 3-4 duplicate posts, too aggressive link building etc will straight away get you blacklisted on Google’s index. Hence keep your calm. Try to write completely original posts. Write attractive headlines that will attract people’s attention. This is the time you should be active in social media sites like digg, stumbleupon etc and try to develop relation with other bloggers in your niche. Try to get the first 5 links in a natural manner. Resist the temptation to build 100s of free links through dofollow blog commenting, social media profile creation or forum signatures etc.
    • If your blog has crossed the first stage then you have successfully created some amount of trust for your blog. Now is the time to convert those wonderful posts into traffic and money. Start concentrating on keyword usage in your blog posts. This is the time to build free backlinks to your blog. Make sure that you are not building all the backlinks to your homepage though. You will do well to read following posts of mine at this stage
      1.  guide to free backlinks
      2. 10 social media sites that allow dofollow links on profile page
      3. Remove stop words from your title to rank better
      4. Image SEO : A Quick Guide and
      5. The best way to use keywords on blog post for maximum impact
    • If you have a blog that is already ranking for long tail keywords, building 1000 more free backlinks is a complete waste of time. Stop your focus on quantity and start focusing on quality. Link-baiting is the way you must go. I am yet to write a post about link-baiting however you can google linkbait, link-bait or link bait to find some awesomely great articles about the post.
