Are you killing your billion dollar ideas??

June 2nd, 2008 by admin | 1 Comment »

Negative questions are too powerful.

What if people upload porn? Youtube dies there
Why will people submit links and vote for them when they don’t get anything in return? death of digg
How will you ever monetize search while microsoft and yahoo have not managed it? google dies there
Do you think there is a market for maybe 10 people for PC? death of microsoft

You see the power of negative questions. It is too easy to think of 10 reasons why a startup will fail. Invariably while starting up, you have not figured out answers to all the questions. That is why you need years to grow up, to solve those questions, to improve your product.

Shoul I avoid discussing an idea with the team at the initial stage?
Not at all. Discussion will help you to look at the ideas from various angles and bring out enhancements. You will need the support of your partners to implement the idea as well.

What is the way out then?
Make the team understand that you have not found answers to all possible questions. There will be questions that will remain unanswered at the end of the discussion. The list above may be helpful as well :)

Start with few basic questions only. Do people need the product. Keep the detailed questions for later, once they have reached a certain stage.

Why I think the Gasoline Price increase is good?

May 28th, 2008 by admin | No Comments »

My freinds say I am a hopeless optimist. The gasoline price has now increased to more than 130$. The increase is causing a lot of problem to customers across the globe. In India, the government is subsidizing the price increase till now. However it looks like it will have to pass on the cost to the customers soon.

However I think that the increase in gasoline price is actually good for us because

  1. It shall force the automobile companies to design more fuel efficient cars
  2. It will force us to use more energy efficient options like travelling by public transport.
  3. It will make the green energy sources more attractive.
  4. There will be increased research for alternate sources of energy.

We shall be more prepared when we run out of petroleum finally

Searchme … a new and nice search engine

March 19th, 2008 by Vineet | 1 Comment »

Just happened to come across this new seach engine called searchme It’s a very new search engine with right now, just an index of 1 billion and is still in beta. But the best thing about it is its user interface and graphics. …yeah not just the graphics but the UI is also nice. Have you seen the cover-flow design on itunes? searchme uses the same beautiful cover-flow for its search results unlike the text only results in Google. (It has text only results also if you want that).
Searchme is backed by Sequoia capital.
As I said right now it’s in beta so u can’t use it directly . However you can register on it by giving your mail id . just visit http://searchme.com and you will know what to do.
Till then you can watch this demo.

Happy surfing :)

Future of TV is Internet

January 24th, 2008 by Sulakshan | No Comments »

I believe that the Future of TV is Internet. If some company is able to link TV telecast to the internet in real time and enable users to get more information about what they are watching, just imagine how much value it will create.

I will explain it with few examples:

1. A user watching a car ad can get more info about the car, like its reviews, on road price in his city and dealer contacts etc.

2. A user watching a Travel Serial can get info about travel plans and costs for the destination he is watching in the serial.

3. In an extreme case, a user can get the subtitles of a foreign language program in his native language.

You can just imagine the possibilities.

Now coming to the technology part, I have some ideas on how this can be implemented. The telecaster embeds some keywords related to the content. These keywords can be name of the product in the ad, or name of the location being shown in the travel program or the text feed of the audio (in extreme case). These keywords can then be passed on to the internet (ok.. Google), processed and meaningful results can be displayed to the user.

The idiot (box) wants some intelligence.
