I have been confused on a number of times thinking what should I do next? Should I write another post or should I concentrate on getting more traffic or do I try out different advertising networks. Even after I have decided to get traffic which method should I use? Blog commenting or article marketing or link building or social media marketing? Do I write keyword driven posts or posts that will do good on social media. The confusion meant I ended up spending more time reading other blogs and less time working on this blog.
The confusion happens because it is really difficult to compare the different options as they provide results at different time scale. A comment on a popular blog/forum takes hardly 5 minutes and provides a large number of users immediately. Getting a backlink on the other hand may take 100s of hours and the impact on traffic is not certain. Similarly a properly optimized theme, that increases feedburner subscribers, does not provide any immediate gain while optimizing the theme for adsense provides an increase in earnings can be measured immediately.
One method that has been working really well for me is comparing the expected return from these options with the time that I have to spend. In calculating the return I take into account the income that will be generated from the action directly and also the indirect gain to the other blogs. Like when a post gets a link from an authority blog, it not only gets traffic to the post, it helps improve the ranking of other posts as well.
