SEO Problem: Home page dominating the internal pages

I have been working on a resume website to try out my seo skills and to put my theoretical learnings into practice. My progress on google.com has not been great though the site has started to get some fairly good results on the google.co.in domain for search terms like sample resume, fresher sample resume, java sample resume etc.

While I continue to study the reason for this sharp difference in ranking on google.com and google.co.in, I had decided to try my hand a single word keyword i.e resume. For this purpose I created a specific page about resumes with optimized title tag, meta description, h1,h2 tags and keyword usage etc. The page has been indexed by google for somedays now.

However I am facing a unique issue and on close examination I see that issue being repeated on my other domains as well.

  • My initial content about sample resume was ranking at 90-100 range on Google.
  • Google avoids keeping 2 pages of the same website on the SERP. For really good authority site it puts up 2 links as well
  • Now google seems to be ignoring my new page. Since the original page was not optimized for resume as a keyword, it continues to linger at 90-100 position only.

Have you ever faced an issue like this? What is the solution to this issue?

I will appreciate some links to my sample cover letter page as well. It is right now at 45 position for “sample cover letter” and I shall like to see the effect of external links on the ranking.

  1. Right. I don’t understand too much of what you’re saying, but since I really do want to monetise my blog, I really appreciate your efforts.

    If you have the time, please do visit my blog- I’d love to hear from you.

    Have a good day!

  2. Sita I never faced any such issue. I talked to few SEO guys and they always suggested me to have a page containing your keyword and make it more optimized for target keyword.
    And I suppose that’s what you are doing it here…
    Though it might take time, or some backlinks will help here.
    Since your resume website is not an authority site, probably that’s why Google is not giving love to it now.

  3. Hmm… this sounds fishy. Google must be having a mechanism to find pages with similar content. Why not take the redundant one out of the sitemap and try?

    As for your first problem, it’s possible that your site rank differently on Google.com and Google.co.in. Since your country ccTLD is not .in, this is governed by where you have hosted your domain. If it’s hosted in India, it’s possible that it ranks better in India. To override this you may use your webmaster tools geo target settings. Probably you already know about it.

    Btw, your sample resume site is a hot niche that can attract a lot of adsense clicks.

    (One more problem SK. Try subscribing to your own RSS feeds – of BinaryDay – once. It’s still showing ‘kyla weber realtor and vince vaughn engaged’ as title for me)

    @Harsh,
    You are right. That is what I have read on seo forums as well.

    Interestingly my experience seems to be different.

    The 2 pages involved are my homepage http://www.jhingalala.com and a page specifically designed for the keyword resume i.e http://www.jhingalala.com/resume.php

    The homepage was targetted to the keyword “sample resume”. However it managed to rank at around 100th position for keyword resume as well.

    My keyword research showed that resume has a much higher potential. So inline with advice from seo gurus, I created a page targetting the keyword resume.

    Unfortunately my homepage continues to dominate the SERP. I was wondering if anyone else has faced the same issue.

    @Harsh,
    Nice suggestion but the redundant one is my homepage :( So I can not really take it out.

    My hosting server is located in USD only. Seems like the difference in ranking may be because of backlink profile.

    I opened a blogspot site few days back on IPL…

    I have a similar problem. Even though i keep posting posts. My most of the google traffic is on the home page. Not sure why. I think the problem is similar.
