Arun Sarin resigns as vodafone reports record profit

without comments

India-born Arun Sarin will leave Vodafone at the end of July and hand over the reins to deputy chief executive Vittorio Colao. Sarin had gone ahead with a number of mega acquisitions inspite of opposition from the board. His moves have paid off as Vodafone posted a record profit of $13.16bn in the year to March 31,2008. The result was driven by the good performance of the assets acquired in the emerging markets.

Arun Sareen graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1975. He did his MS in Engineering from University of California, Berkeley and subsequently did his MBA from the same university. He started his professional career in 1978 as an environmental analyst for a Washington, D.C., consulting firm.

n 1995, Arun Sarin joined a newly formed wireless-communications company, AirTouch Communications. In 1999, AirTouch and Vodafone joined hands to create Vodafone-AirTouch. Arun Sarin was made chief executive of the newly formed company. In April 2000, Arun Sarin resigned from Vodafone-AirTouch.

Inevitable Petrol Price Hike : Time for some citizen activism

without comments

The crude has reached an all time high price of 135$ per barrel. However there has been no change in the price of the petroleum products in India. Oil marketing companies are incurring losses for every litre of petrol and diesel that they sell. This has led to private companies like reliance closing petrol pumps. The state run oil companies are only weeks away from bankruptcy.

The only reason prices have not gone up till now is that this is an election year. The congress party has to finally bite the bullet. The left is opposing the move.

I think that we bloggers have a responsibility to increase the awareness about the importance of energy conservation. We need to convine more and more people to conserve petrol wherever possible.
Here are some initial thoughts
Walk for short distances.
Use public transport.
Stop the engine at the red lights
Spoil less food (saves cooking oil)

put your thoughts as comments or post on your blog. I shall be linking to each post dealing with this topic. (You will get a one-way PR3 link). Hope that is a good enough bribe for you. :)

Nokia N78 Review

without comments

The new Nokia N78 handset is loaded with Wi-Fi connectivity, FM music transmitter and Bluetooth support. The model has integrated GPS with free Nokia maps for geo-tagging of your photos taken by its 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Unlike the previous N73, the N78 gets rid of real keys in favor of touch surfaces. It has HSPDA 3G support, however that may not be very useful in India.

Nokia N78

The Nokia N78 weighs only 101.8 g. It has 70 MB internal memory and 96 MB SDRAM memory. It does not have a infr-red port though. Its Li-Ion battery shall run for 320 hours in stand-by mode. It offers upto 4 hour nand 20 minutes of talktime in a single recharge.

It is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2008.
