March 14th, 2008 by admin | 1 Comment »

This may not be very useful but this is 1 trick with which you can impress most of your freinds.

* Open Paint.
* Start the movie in any player.
* While the movie is being played in the player, press “Print Screen” button on key board.
* Go to Paint and Press ctrl+v
* Don’t minimize the movie player. (This is important)
* Open Paint now and watch the movie in Paint

Firefox captures 20% of browser market share.

March 12th, 2008 by admin | No Comments »

Here is some statistics based on internet usage data collected by w3counter. Looks like firefox is giving a serious challenge to internet explorer. Firefox 2.0 with 22.89% has already gone past i.e 7.0. i.e 6.0 and 7.0 together enjoy 62% market share though. The important question is when people decide to migrate from i.e 6 which browser will they choose. ie7 or firefox? what do you think?

Web Browsers
1 Internet Explorer 6.0 39.00%
2 Firefox 2.0 22.89%
3 Internet Explorer 7.0 22.67%
4 Firefox 1.5 4.63%

Data from http://w3counter.com/globalstats.php.

How does the number look for binaryday? Well it differs a lot. while w3counter number shows a negligible % user for mozilla, for binaryday mozilla forms the 2nd post popular browser. Here is data from my awstat for march.

Browsers Percent
MS Internet Explorer 46.5 %
Mozilla 18.4 %
Unknown 16.2 %
Firefox 15.1 %
Opera 1.4 %
Safari 1.4 %
Wget 0.2 %
Netscape 0.2 %
Epiphany 0.1 %
Firebird (Old Firefox) 0 %
Others 0 %

Get your idea funded, WITHOUT a business plan :)

March 12th, 2008 by admin | 1 Comment »

Have you ever felt that you have a killer idea, but you are not able to work on it due to lack of funding. And you think that writing business plans is not worth your time. Well here is a good news. You do NOT need a business plan to get funded.

Y Combinator is now accepting applications for the summer 2008 funding cycle. Here is what they say about their way of evaluating investment ideas.

How do we choose who to fund? The people in your group are what matter most to us. We look for brains, motivation, and a sense of design. Experience is helpful but not critical.

Your idea is important too, but mainly as evidence that you can have good ideas. Most successful startups change their idea substantially.

The best part comes towards the end.
We don’t expect you to have a formal business plan yet. All you have to do is fill out our application.

To know why I am so excited about this, look at the past companies they have funded.
Reddit, Loopt, ClickFacts, TextPayMe, Snipshot, Inkling, Flagr, Wufoo, YouOS, LikeBetter, Thinkature, JamGlue, Shoutfit, Scribd, Weebly, Virtualmin, Buxfer, Octopart, Heysan, Justin.TV, I’m In Like With You, SocialMoth, Xobni, Versionate, Adpinion, Anywhere.FM, Fuzzwich, Bountii, Auctomatic, Disqus, Draftmix, Webmynd, RescueTime, Reble, Heroku, Tipjoy, AddHer, and 8AWeek. It can not get better than this.

add-on to the last post

March 11th, 2008 by Vineet | No Comments »

Not only we can use a ‘+’ to make more mail ids but also a ‘.’ (dot). Say if you have a id like myid@gmail.com then any mail send to my.id@gmail.com or my.id+andromeda@gmail.com will also go to myid@gmail.com.

But what’s the use of this?
Well if someone asks you for your mail id and you don’t trust him, you can give a modified mail id to him. He can only send you mails but won’t be able to crack in or misuse your account that easily.

Why does this happen?
Simply because gmail ignores any dots in the mail id and possibly anything between a ‘+’ and ‘@’ .

Technology is really magic … isn’t it?

Your gmail addresses that you do not know!!!

March 11th, 2008 by admin | No Comments »

if you have 1 gmail id then you have an infinite amount of gmail ids and there is a good chance that you do not know about all these different email ids. If you email address is abc@gmail.com then try sending a mail to abc@googlemail.com. Send another mail to abc+test@gmail.com. Now check your mail box. You will find both the mails in your mailbox. Surpised?? Well I know magic ;-)

Wanna switch to Linux? … Few tips

March 10th, 2008 by Vineet | 10 Comments »

Three years ago when I switched to Linux, I didn’t even know that there is even a wallpaper on Linux! , moreover all the books that I got in Library had only CUI stuff and hyper geeky stuff .(I did not have a usable net connection that time) Luckily I got a new book called “Fedora Core 3 Bible” by Cristopher Negus which explained things in a very easy to use manner and how to do all the stuff in GUI rather than CUI (For all those who don’t know yet, yes there is a GUI for Linux and even better than Windows vista!).
The major problem that I can figure out during the seminars that I take at college is that students don’t switch to Linux not because they don’t want to or not because Linux is hard to use but because they don’t know that Linux is so user friendly and easy to use and nice to look at. Then they think that they can’t listen to music or watch movies or play games on Linux… Again they don’t know that sound and video quality in Linux is much better than Windows on same machine (try comparing it if you haven’t done yet).
Now the main reason for the ignorance is that the books available in the college libraries are mostly quite old and the teachers are more of technical and it has been long time since they studied all this stuff (No offence but there is something called generation gap ).
So what to do?
First of all try getting a new book, (even Fedora Core 3 is very old now)…Just go to the bookstore, browse few Linux books and you will know what to get … The money you spend on a new book will be worth it.
Talk to your friends … learn in groups.
Get help from your college seniors.
Best is to put your queries on forums like Linuxquestions.org. Don’t hesitate in asking even a question as simple as “where’s the start button in Linux?”. Newbies are always helped on these forums.

Start off with Linux as soon as possible and I am sure within few months you will become a die hard Linux user.

Get a pagerank 4 without any external link !!!

March 9th, 2008 by admin | 4 Comments »

At the beginning of this blog, I had planned to keep writing about my SEO efforts. There were only 2 posts (here and here). There were no more posts after that because I got busy with content creation and with another venture of mine. I had forgotten all about SEO till I happened to install google toolbar on my browser and surprisingly I have a pagerank 4 for binaryday. I was surprised because I have not tried to get any external link till now.

The reason I am posting it here is because the pagerank goes against all conventional SEO theory I have read till now.

    The domain is not old. It is less than 6 months old.
    I write about diverse topics. I have never thought about SEO while writing an article. So you will not find any keyword concentration on my page
    Most importantly the blog does not have absolutely any external links to it. There are a couple of linkbacks from comments I had left on other blogs like techcrunch, but I am sure google must be heavily discounting those links.

Then what explains this sudden jump in my google pagerank? I am not sure. If any SEO expert happens to read this post, then will request to let me know what is it that I am doing right.

Not only you can search for some text you can also use google as an advanced calculator, a dictionary, and units converter (eg. Km to miles, $ to Rs., etc.) for any type of quantity.
Also don’t forget to check the links in the above linked page.
Use these tricks and show-off to your friends ;)

A C Programme without main function !!

March 9th, 2008 by admin | No Comments »

How to write a C program without a main function.Is it possible to do that.. OK.. heres the code

#include

#define decode(s,t,u,m,p,e,d) m##s##u##t
#define begin decode(a,n,i,m,a,t,e)

int begin()
{
printf(” hello “);
}

Yes the above program runs perfectly fine.But how,whats the logic behind it?

Here we are using preprocessor directive #define with arguments.The ‘##’ operator is called the token pasting or token merging operator.That is we can merge two or more characters with it.

NOTE: A Preprocessor is program which processess the source code before compilation.

Look at the 2nd line of program-

#define decode(s,t,u,m,p,e,d) m##s##u##t

What is the preprocessor doing here.The macro decode(s,t,u,m,p,e,d) is being expanded as “msut” (The ## operator merges m,s,u & t into msut).The logic is when you pass (s,t,u,m,p,e,d) as argument it merges the 4th,1st,3rd & the 2nd characters(tokens).

Now look at the third line of the program-

#define begin decode(a,n,i,m,a,t,e)

Here the preprocessor replaces the macro “begin” with the expansion decode(a,n,i,m,a,t,e).According to the macro definition in the previous line the argument must de expanded so that the 4th,1st,3rd & the 2nd characters must be merged.In the argument (a,n,i,m,a,t,e) 4th,1st,3rd & the 2nd characters are ‘m’,'a’,'i’ & ‘n’.

So the third line “int begin()” is replaced by “int main()” by the preprocessor before the program is passed on for the compiler.That’s it…

The bottom line is there can never exist a C program without a main() function.Here we are just playing a gimmick that makes us beleive the program runs without main function.But here we are using the proprocessor directive to intelligently replace the word begin” by “main” .

Tips & Tricks 1 : I am unable to install software online

March 7th, 2008 by Vineet | No Comments »

I had played (literally) a lot with my system in past 3 years … Had lots of experiences (some really mind blowing) of destroying and repairing my system. Thought of sharing some good ones with you all.

I discovered the cause (one of the probable causes) to this problem (of being unable to install online software) when a few days ago my friend was unable to install adobe reader from adobe’s site on his Windows XP (yes windows, not even Linux !). His system met all the hardware and software pre-requirements. I asked him to check his system’s date. It showed a date of 2005 (This incident happened in Dec 2007). THAT WAS THE PROBLEM.
He adjusted his system’s date and installation was a cake walk. When you try to install a software online the server checks your system’s date and does not install if you have a wrong date…Someone please try installing with a future date…I haven’t tried it… The error shown nowhere tells you about the date problem.
One more thing , your Gtalk will also not work if you have wrong date settings.
If you have to reset your computer’s time every time you boot into it … Please get your BIOS battery changed immediately.
But sometimes disturbing your system’s date and time settings is useful if you want to do some Software piracy… I will stop here ;-) on the issue of piracy.
Wait for more tips and tricks posts … Hope this one was useful.

Some famous web browsers compared

March 1st, 2008 by Vineet | 3 Comments »

March 1, 2008 was a historical day in the history of web browsing. Official support for all Netscape client products was removed . (Please read about Netscape in wikipedia to know how much Netscape has contributed to our online lives).
Also another big current news in the browser world is that Firefox has crossed the 500 million downloads milestone. Read below and you will know why…

Recently I have been working on some javascript codes and for testing I tried six common browsers. Here I would like to present a comparison of these five browsers. The browsers I tested are

1. Mozilla-Firefox 2.0 (Windows and Linux (It’s called Iceweasel on Debian))
2. Opera 9.26(Linux)
3. Netscape 9(Windows and Linux)
4. Flock 1.1 (Linux)
5.1. Internet Explorer 5 (Windows)
5.2. Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)
6. Epiphany (Linux)

PS: The list misses Apple’s Safari browser. I don’t have a Mac yet and Safari for Windows sucks so much that I did not even bother to test it. (Sorry, Apple fanboys)

Internet Explorer 5 is now a stone age browser. It doesn’t support .png images and has limited support for javascript … In simple terms you cannot get those beautiful, translucent images and cool animated effects (which are now so much a part of any website). It does not have tabbed browsing and is really slow. For all of you who are still on IE5 I beg you to please switch over to firefox or atleast IE7.

Next in line IE7. Well it’s somewhat better than IE5 but practically again a nuisance. No doubt it is fast, has tabbed browsing, Support for various image formats (transparency included), better support for javascript BUT the problem lies in its security. It is too secure to use … won’t open anything you use Internet for, mostly . You can compare its security to a building without a boundary wall but a big gate with a big lock !!! And yes, there are still issues with javascript … Mr. Ballmer please understand that not all coders work for MS and if not support Open Source atleast live in harmony with it.

Opera is a good browser (for Linux users) if you are able to install it. I use Debian etch . I downloaded the debian package , installed it, ran it and booooom …. My CPU fan started shouting at me… had to kill the opera process. Then I downloaded the source code and ran the script without installing (installing from the source code was also useless) … it worked fine but your PWD must be the directory where the script is present . I had to tweak the script a bit to get it working from anywhere. Once you get Opera working you will love it .

Epiphany … Don’t even think about it … It’s a counterpart for IE5 ….OK, a little better.

Flock is a young browser … I did not play much with it but it is recommended by our old experienced , late Netscape so I trust it is good .

Netscape is awesome but unfortunately there is no more official support for it … so it’s not the browser of the future. Now the Netscape users are recommended to use Firefox or Flock.

Finally, Mozilla-Firefox is a clear winner… With a huge community support and so many useful plugins (more than 2000) and such a good support for almost anything there is no doubt that it is the best.

Happy browsing !
