What’s a Linux Distro ? (Pizza way !!!)
Whenever someone starts using Linux he comes across so many names like Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Suse…(The list is long).
What are all these ?
These are called Linux Distros. The word Distro is kind of abbreviation of the word Distribution. But what do we mean by distro? You can think of a distro as a pizza. There are so many variations of pizza to choose from…extra cheese, thick crust, thin crust, a hell lot of them.
A Linux distro is a similar thing. Just as per your taste you eat a pizza similarly according to your need or work you use a Linux distro. By need I mean …Do you use your computer for multimedia? Do you use it for development? Do you use it as a server? Do you use it as a learning tool? Do you want ease of installing applications? Do you use it for scientific purposes? …. There are many scenarios.
Also the various applications you get with the Linux distro or get it from Internet are like toppings on a Pizza. You want to listen to music and watch movies, get the Mplayer topping… I mean application. You want to chat with your friends, get the Pidgin topping.
Some of the most common and good Linux distros are as below…
Red Hat, CentOs for Server and commercial work
Fedora for Learning
Ubuntu for Graphics and development
Suse for high user friendliness
Debian for scientific work and if you need a lot of applications with your Linux.
PS: The ideas in this post are my own thoughts.
Food and Software are so similar?
