There are many websites that allow you to use most of these popular chat tools from the browser. There is a good chance that at least one of these is not banned in your office.
Meebo It is the most famous website in the list and definitely the best as well. The user experience is the closest to that of the desktop clients. Personally I love their blog. Only disadvantage is that may be too many people in your company already know about it and hence your IT department has blocked it as well 
koolim This one is not as popular as meebo. However I like it a lot because of its simple interface. You can even see your inbox in the case of gmail. Most importantly since this is not that popular, chances are it is still not banned at your office.
iloveim is one more browser based instant message service. However it has too many advertisements on the chat page and hence a bit distracting. However just in case, the above 2 sites are blocked at your place, you can go for this one.
